Questeq, a privately owned information technology service and technology management provider in Moon Township, is finding that technology has continued to be important in a stagnating economy.

“This has been the best year we’ve ever had, and we’ve had great years,” said Jessica Main, who works in human relations and national product sales. “Things just seemed to explode for us after Jan. 1.”

But with products and services that are in demand, it can be a challenge to find people to fill the jobs.

Main said that’s because many of those in the Pittsburgh market who qualify for IT positions are already employed.

“Pittsburgh’s market is better than the rest of the country,” Main said, referring to the number of people still employed here. “I do think we have a better market than other places. It’s not as bad as everywhere else.”

Resumes from previous candidates have been kept on file, and the company plans to see whether those applicants are still looking.

“I just got notification, we need to add two more employees,” said Main, who is preparing to post positions online for two network engineers.

Main said public libraries, school districts and companies are outsourcing their in-house departments to technology providers. That’s where Questeq, which sells software and hardware nationally, comes in. Eight part-time staff members work the help desk, troubleshooting computer problems with clients. If the problem can’t be solved, support workers, network engineers and a director of technology can offer on-site help.

The increased business has allowed Questeq to expand and hire more employees — more than 15 in the last eight months, six of them recently because of new accounts — taking the company from 27 employees to about 50.

“The economy has been good for us in a way,” Main said.
